Lancaster County is known for very fertile land that results in great agriculture, leading Pennsylvania’s counties in terms of agricultural production. The beautiful views and continued emphasis on the land is one of the charms of the area in terms of tourism.

The wonderful rural landscapes make the historic Strasburg Rail Road, the oldest continuously operated United States railroad, a perfect fit. As the train passes through the 4 ½ mile route, passengers view what the citizens value in their home.

The Strasburg Rail Road was chartered in 1832 to link the area businesses and farmers to the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad. The land was graded in 1835 and was operational in horse-drawn form by 1837. The company purchased its first locomotive, the William Penn, in 1851. Economic changes and Hurricane Hazel almost led to the demise of the Strasburg in 1958, but a local non-profit group was formed to purchase the railroad. Tourists brought in a new use in January of 1959.

Views for this post were photographed from the Cherry Crest Farm. To see a gallery of photographs featuring the Strasburg Rail Road and the wonderful Lancaster County landscape, click here.
